Mexican nationals plead guilty to supporting CJNG terrorist group
Two Mexican nationals, María del Rosario Navarro Sánchez and Gustavo Castro Medina, have pleaded guilty in a Texas federal court to crimes involving the support of the Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG). This case marks a significant legal milestone, as it is the first time the U.S. has applied the legal concept of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization to a Mexican drug trafficking cell.
Navarro Sánchez, known as “La Señora,” admitted to orchestrating a conspiracy to traffic high-powered firearms from the United States to Mexico to facilitate the CJNG’s narcotics operations. She also admitted to employing human traffickers to illegally bring individuals from Mexico into the United States. Her co-defendant, Castro Medina, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic firearms and the intent to distribute synthetic drugs.
The defendants face a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The U.S. Department of Justice noted that the CJNG has been designated as a foreign terrorist organization, providing authorities with enhanced tools to combat the group's activities, which include kidnapping, murder, and the use of explosives.
