Brazil police detain suspects in fraud and organized‑crime raids
Police operations across Brazil resulted in a series of arrests. In Camacan, Bahia, a 27‑year‑old was taken into preventive detention after investigators linked him to a vehicle‑consignment fraud that harmed more than 20 victims in the Eunápolis area. In Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana, Geovani Moisés da Silva dos Santos was arrested for charging a tourist R$8.5 thousand for a R$40 caipirinha and attempting additional unauthorized charges totalling R$34 thousand. In São José do Cedro, a driver was apprehended for estelionato after refueling a vehicle and leaving the station without paying R$250.
Separately, Operation Leviatã in Rio Grande do Norte resulted in the detention of seven suspects tied to a criminal organization involved in drug trafficking, homicides and illegal firearms. Operation Saneamento in Nazaré, Bahia, dismantled a faction’s rural camp, seizing drug‑trafficking equipment and incinerating the site. The joint Ministry of Public Prosecutors’ Operation Falso Pix led to the arrest of two men in Cuiabá and Várzea Grande and the freezing of assets exceeding R$10.8 million. Additionally, a colonel of the Brazilian Army was arrested in Brasília for assaulting his 15‑year‑old son and possessing an illegal firearm, and a 30‑year‑old man was detained in Morro do Coco with ammunition, a cloned vehicle and weapons, claiming affiliation with a criminal faction.
