Tydal Data Center to build largest battery in the Nordics

Tydal Data Center is constructing what is described as the largest battery in the Nordic region at the Kirkvollen industrial area in Tydal, Norway. The battery system, with a capacity of 250 megawatt-hours, is designed to provide backup power for the facility for one hour or potentially power the entire city of Trondheim for 45 minutes in the event of a power failure.

The data center has reserved 180 megawatts of power. While founder Haakon Bryhni has declined to comment on specific clients, reports from Bloomberg suggest that the AI company Anthropic is expected to move into the facility this December. The project follows the 2024 sale of the data center to the Singapore-based company Bitdeer.

In an effort to promote environmental sustainability, the project plans to utilize waste heat from the servers to power nearby greenhouses for food production. Once construction is complete, the facility is expected to create approximately 110 permanent jobs.
