East Asia weather crisis: Quadruple typhoons trigger flooding and storms
East Asia is experiencing severe weather disruptions due to a rare concentration of tropical cyclones. The Japan Meteorological Agency reports that four typhoons are simultaneously present in the waters near Japan, a phenomenon not seen in August since 1994.
In China, multiple typhoons are impacting the mainland. Typhoon Kenari made landfall in Fujian Province, while Typhoon Nala is expected to hit the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the Leizhou Peninsula. Typhoon Soudel is also approaching the coasts of Zhejiang and Fujian. These storms have triggered widespread flooding, particularly in Guangxi, where approximately 61,000 people have been affected and tens of thousands have sought emergency shelter. In some areas, river levels have reached their highest points since 1986.
In Japan, Typhoon 18 has caused significant disruption in the Amami and Okinawa regions, bringing extreme winds and heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, much of western and eastern Japan is facing dangerous heatwaves, with temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius in cities like Fukuoka and Kumamoto, prompting heatstroke alerts across 37 prefectures.
