Saedeul remnants strengthen into Storm No. 5 and trigger Flo

Overview

The rare concentration of four simultaneous typhoons continues to impact Japan and China. Typhoon Saedeul (also referred to as Saudel) caused significant disruption across Okinawa and the southwestern islands, including at least two minor injuries and over 34,000 power outages in the Amami Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture. Air and sea travel were paralyzed, with approximately 150 flight cancellations at Naha Airport.

In China, Typhoon Saedeul made landfall in the Taizhou and Wenzhou coastal areas of Zhejiang province, with maximum sustained winds reaching 35 meters per second. This caused major aviation disruptions, with over 200 flight cancellations, and led to the temporary suspension of high-speed and regular railway lines in Zhejiang.

Following its passage through mainland China, the system weakened into tropical depression TD20 before strengthening into Storm No. 5 in the North East Sea. As of September 1, the storm center was located approximately 240 km north of the Paracel Islands, maintaining maximum sustained winds of level 8 with gusts reaching level 10.

By September 3, the storm triggered severe flash flooding and heavy rainfall across several Chinese provinces, prompting authorities to activate a Level II emergency response. In Zhejiang, extreme rainfall trapped more than 2,500 teachers and students in a Wenzhou school compound, requiring drone-assisted supply deliveries. In Fujian, the typhoon made its third landfall in Zhangzhou. Ningde reported massive influxes of water and mud, while Fuding experienced submerged vehicles and swept debris. Flooding has damaged buildings and disrupted electricity and water services. As the storm moves toward Guangdong, local authorities in cities such as Zhangzhou and Quanzhou have suspended industrial activities, classes, and work.
