Typhoon Champi approaches Jeju, prompting emergency preparations
Typhoon Champi, the 30th typhoon of the season, is approaching the waters near Jeju Island and southern South Korea. While a direct landfall on the Korean Peninsula is considered unlikely, the storm is expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and high waves to the region through the weekend.
Jeju Island and the South Korean Ministry of the Interior and Safety have activated emergency response protocols. Jeju expects rainfall of 50–100mm, with mountainous and mid-mountain areas potentially seeing over 150mm. Authorities are focusing on preventing flooding by clearing drainage systems of autumn leaves and debris, and managing potential airport delays due to wind.
In response to the threat, Jeju's fire safety headquarters is inspecting 185 high-risk areas, including riverbanks and coastal lowlands, while preparing emergency vehicles and equipment. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety is also emphasizing the protection of outdoor signage, greenhouses, and fishing facilities to mitigate damage from strong gusts.
