Typhoon Champi strikes Taiwan, causing casualties and power outages

Typhoon Champi has impacted Taiwan, resulting in at least one death and approximately 350 injuries. The storm, which briefly reached super typhoon status, swept past the northeast coast, causing significant disruption including toppled trees, school and shop closures, and power outages for thousands of households. More than 4,300 people were forced to evacuate their homes.

In Yilan County, rainfall exceeded 400mm on Friday. While the typhoon center narrowly missed making landfall—passing approximately 1km from the waters near Nan'ao—its outer circulation brought heavy rain and strong winds to northern and central regions. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued heavy rain warnings for multiple counties and cities.

In Kinmen County, a level-three emergency response center was established as the typhoon approached. Although Kinmen was not within the direct storm surge zone, authorities prepared for wind gusts of up to level 9. Meanwhile, the storm is forecast to move toward China and Japan, potentially affecting Okinawa and causing further flight cancellations in the region.
