Typhoon Maysak floods southern China, dozens killed and 130,000 evacuated

Typhoon Maysak made landfall in southern China in early July 2026, bringing record‑breaking rain to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The storm caused the Liulan reservoir dam and other embankments to breach, flooding Nanning, Hengzhou, Binyang and surrounding towns. Official reports cite death tolls ranging from four to at least 39 people, with many more missing, and more than 130,000 residents forced to flee their homes.

Rescue teams deployed thousands of rubber boats, inflatable rafts and life‑jackets, while paramilitary police helped evacuate people from flood‑stricken villages. President Xi Jinping ordered an “all‑out” response and promised additional emergency funding. The disaster was compounded by rare tornadoes in Hubei Province that killed at least 11, and a landslide in Gansu that claimed 21 lives.

Authorities warned that the approaching Super‑Typhoon Bavi could worsen conditions. Unusual secondary hazards included the escape of hundreds of snakes from a breeding farm and dozens of zoo animals swept away by floodwaters. The Chinese government allocated tens of millions of yuan for immediate relief, road repairs, power restoration and rebuilding of homes.
