Typhoon Narra causes landslides and flooding in Northern Vietnam

Typhoon Narra (Storm No. 4) is currently active in the waters between Quang Ninh and Hai Phong, Vietnam. As of August 23, the storm maintains maximum sustained winds of level 8-9 (62-88 km/h) with gusts reaching level 11. The storm is moving very slowly and is expected to eventually turn toward southwest Guangxi, China, where it is projected to weaken into a tropical depression.

The storm's circulation has triggered heavy rainfall across Northern Vietnam, with some provinces such as Bac Ninh, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Hung Yen, Ninh Binh, and Thanh Hoa expected to see rainfall exceeding 250 mm.

In the mountainous northern regions, the heavy rain has caused significant infrastructure damage. The Vietnam Road Administration reports hundreds of landslide and flooding incidents. Notable impacts include 69 landslide locations in Lang Son and 12 landslide sites on National Route 6. These events have caused flooding and blocked several national and provincial roads in provinces including Cao Bang, Lao Cai, and Bac Ninh. Authorities have deployed personnel to monitor and clear these routes 24/7.
