Vietnam endures extreme heat while tracking Tropical Storm Mekhala

The national weather agency warns that a severe heat wave is sweeping across Vietnam, with temperatures in the North reaching above 38 °C and some locations exceeding 40 °C. The intense heat is expected to persist through the end of June, raising risks of dehydration, heat‑related illness, and fire hazards, especially in densely populated areas. Forecasts call for continued hot days in the northern and central regions, while the southern provinces will experience intermittent rain and thunderstorms that could cause localized flooding.

Simultaneously, a tropical disturbance in the north‑western Pacific has strengthened into Tropical Storm Mekhala. By 21 June the storm had intensified to a Category 10 system with gusts reaching level 12, moving west‑northwest at 20‑25 km/h. Meteorological services note that Mekhala is unlikely to enter Vietnam's South China Sea but is projected to affect the Philippines, then turn north toward Taiwan and eastern Japan. Agencies in Vietnam, Japan and the Philippines continue to monitor the storm for potential impacts on sea conditions and rainfall.
