Tyrnavos former mayor Dimitrios Kougionis passes away

Dimitrios Kougionis, the former long-serving mayor of Tyrnavos, has passed away at the age of 74 or 75. He served as mayor for 16 consecutive years, from 1979 to 1994, having been elected four times.

Kougionis was a physicist by training and was credited with significantly modernizing the infrastructure of Tyrnavos. His tenure saw the development of essential services and facilities, including sewage systems, biological treatment plants, road construction, a municipal theater, a health center, a municipal bus station, and an indoor gymnasium.

Following his mayoral terms, he also served as a Prefectural Councilor between 1999 and 2008. The Tyrnavos Municipal Council has declared three days of municipal mourning to honor his legacy and contributions to the region.
