Death and funeral of former Tyrnavos mayor Dimitrios Kougion

Overview

Dimitrios Kougionis, the former long-serving mayor of Tyrnavos, has passed away. A physicist by training, Kougionis served sixteen consecutive years as mayor from 1979 to 1994, having been elected four times.

He was credited with modernizing the region's infrastructure, including the development of sewage systems, road construction, a municipal theater, a health center, and a municipal bus station. Following his mayoral tenure, he served as a Prefectural Councilor between 1999 and 2008.

The Tyrnavos Municipal Council declared three days of mourning. A funeral service was held at the Holy Church of Saint Gedon, presided over by Metropolitan Hieronymos of Larissa and Tyrnavos. During the service, the current Mayor of Tyrnavos, Stelios Tsikritsis, described the late leader as ‘the reformer of modern Tyrnavos’.
