UAE advances digital identity platform and startup ecosystem

The United Arab Emirates' national digital identity system, UAE Pass, launched in 2018 as a joint effort by Smart Dubai, the Digital Government Regulatory Authority and the Abu Dhabi Digital Authority. It consolidates more than 12,000 government, semi‑government and private services under a single, cryptographically secured login and enables legally binding digital signatures using SHA‑256 encryption.

At the same time, the UAE has become the Middle East’s leading startup hub. The country now hosts a high per‑capita concentration of unicorns and has attracted billions of dollars in venture‑capital funding. Government initiatives such as long‑term residency visas, sovereign‑backed venture funds, and free‑zone jurisdictions like DIFC, ADGM and Dubai Internet City provide foreign ownership, zero corporate tax on qualifying income and streamlined company formation, fostering rapid growth of technology and financial‑services firms.
