UAE launches AI-powered VAT refund platform for tourists

The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has launched a paperless, AI-powered VAT refund platform for tourists departing through major UAE airports, including Dubai International (DXB), Zayed International in Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah International. Developed in collaboration with Planet, the system aims to reduce refund processing times from approximately nine days to just one business day.

The process utilizes a smart mobile application where travelers register via facial scanning and passport/bank card uploads. At departure, tourists scan a dynamic QR code at service points to initiate the refund. If no physical inspection of purchases is required, the transaction is completed entirely within the app. If inspection is necessary, the app directs travelers to smart gates using facial recognition and self-service kiosks.

Artificial intelligence is employed to categorize travelers, identify eligible transactions for automatic refunds, match invoice and travel data, and detect unusual patterns during the verification process.
