MT GEM NO. 2 tanker struck by projectile off UAE coast

The Panama-flagged crude oil tanker MT GEM NO. 2 was struck by an unidentified projectile while anchored off Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, sparking a fire on board. The UAE National Guard's Coast Guard Division conducted a rescue operation, successfully evacuating all 22 crew members, who are reported to be Indian nationals. All rescued personnel are in stable medical condition.

There are conflicting reports regarding the cause of the incident. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported the vessel was hit by an unknown projectile on its port side. Indian Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal described the event as a drone strike. Conversely, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed the supertanker struck a naval mine while attempting to use an unauthorized route out of the Strait of Hormuz.

The incident occurred near Al Jazeera in the UAE, raising significant maritime security concerns in the Arabian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy transit route. Authorities are currently investigating the extent of the damage and the identity of those responsible.
