Maritime security incidents in the Persian Gulf

Overview

Maritime security concerns have escalated in the Persian Gulf and near the Strait of Hormuz following two separate attacks on tankers.

On September 21, the Liberia-flagged LPG tanker M. T. Al Maryah was struck by a drone while sailing eastbound. The vessel reported no major damage, and all 19 crew members, including nine Indian nationals, were confirmed safe. The tanker subsequently anchored at Khor Fakkan.

On October 10, the Panama-flagged crude oil tanker MT GEM NO. 2 was struck by a projectile while anchored off Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, causing a fire. The UAE National Guard's Coast Guard Division evacuated all 22 crew members, who are Indian nationals, and reported they are in stable condition.

Accounts of the second incident vary: the UK Maritime Trade Operations reported an unknown projectile hit the port side, while the Indian Shipping Minister described it as a drone strike. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed the vessel struck a naval mine while using an unauthorized route. Authorities are investigating the incident.
