UAE weather transitions as Suhail star approaches
The United Arab Emirates is experiencing a transition in weather patterns as the Suhail star, also known as Canopus, approaches its expected appearance on August 24. Traditionally, the rise of this star signals the end of peak summer heat and the beginning of more moderate conditions in the region.
While the star is a significant cultural and seasonal indicator, Dr. Mohamed Al Ebri of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) clarified that there is no direct scientific link between the star and temperature changes. Instead, the cooling is attributed to astronomical and climatic factors, such as the decreasing solar elevation angle and reduced solar radiation duration.
Recent weather activity has included rainfall in parts of Dubai, such as the Margham oil and gas field, providing relief from intense heat. Temperatures in the country have recently reached highs near 50.4°C, but the NCM anticipates a gradual transition toward cooler weather following the seasonal shift.
