UAE heatwave persists with rain, dust and cloud‑seeding

Overview

The extreme summer pattern that began in late June 2025 has continued into the summer of 2026. On 27 July, the National Centre of Meteorology forecast interior temperatures up to 48 °C, coastal highs between 42 °C and 37 °C, and overnight humidity near 90%. By 31 July, cloud-seeding missions were launched to combat intermittent peaks of 50 °C. In early August, the National Centre of Meteorology warned of a multi-day period of showers affecting eastern, southern, and inland areas. During this time, interior temperatures reached up to 50 °C, while major cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi peaked around 46 °C. By 9 August, heavy thunderstorms, rainfall, and hail were reported, particularly in eastern and southern regions including Al Ain. The National Centre of Meteorology issued orange and yellow alerts for convective clouds. These weather patterns also impacted neighboring regions, with Oman issuing flash flood warnings for the Hajar mountains and Saudi Arabia forecasting thunderstorms and dust storms.

By 14 August, extreme heat persisted, with Bada Dafas in the Al Dhafra region recording 50.4 °C, just below the month’s peak of 51.2 °C. Authorities continued to enforce the mid-day work ban to protect outdoor laborers. By 17 August, the National Centre of Meteorology issued warnings for extreme heat, fog, and potential rainfall. High temperatures of up to 49 °C were expected in internal regions like Al Ain and Liwa, while increased humidity was forecast to cause fog or mist over western coastal areas. Convective clouds were expected to bring rainfall to eastern and southern areas mid-week, accompanied by winds up to 40 km/h that could raise dust. Residents continue to await the rise of the Suhail star around 24 August, which traditionally signals a transition to cooler weather, though experts note increased humidity may continue to cause discomfort.
