UAEMex promotes epistemic sovereignty and open science in Latin America

The Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEMex) has launched a seminar titled ‘From Epistemic Sovereignty to Artificial Intelligence: The Paradigm of Scientific Communication Towards the Common Good.’ The event aims to address the challenges Latin American science faces regarding knowledge production, access, and the influence of commercial interests.

During the inauguration, UAEMex Rector Martha Patricia Zarza Delgado emphasized that universities must generate research that understands and transforms social realities. Arianna Becerril García, the university's Secretary of Science, noted that economic and linguistic barriers in international scientific publishing limit the reach of Latin American research.

Additionally, officials raised concerns regarding artificial intelligence systems, which are primarily trained on Anglo-Saxon data and may reproduce cultural frameworks that do not align with Latin American contexts. The institution is advocating for an open science model that treats humanistic and technological research as a public good to strengthen local knowledge production.
