Mexican academic focus on scientific communication
Overview
Mexican academic institutions are increasingly focusing on the dissemination of scientific and humanistic knowledge to the public. At UNAM, officials argued that science should not be the “exclusive property of those who generate it” and emphasized the need for communication strategies to overcome technical and social barriers.
Building on this theme of social utility, the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEMex) has launched initiatives to promote epistemic sovereignty and open science. UAEMex officials expressed concerns regarding economic and linguistic barriers in international publishing, as well as the potential for artificial intelligence to reproduce cultural frameworks that do not align with Latin American contexts. The institution is advocating for an open science model that treats research as a “public good” to strengthen local knowledge production.
