University misconduct incidents reported in Mexico and Peru

The Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT) in Ciudad Victoria, Mexico, is investigating a violent hazing incident involving a freshman student at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics. The victim, Ángel Tadeo Rubio Ortiz, was reportedly subjected to physical and psychological abuse, including being covered in substances and forced to ingest an allergen. Following the incident, which resulted in the student's hospitalization in intensive care, his family has formally requested his withdrawal from the university.

UAT Rector Dámaso Anaya Alvarado has condemned the practice, stating there is ‘zero tolerance’ for such behavior and promising firm administrative sanctions against those responsible. The university is collaborating with the Tamaulipas State Prosecutor's Office, which has opened an investigation into potential intentional injury. The university also maintains an internal investigation through the University Rights Defender.

Separately, in Peru, a professor named David Espinoza Colonia was detained by national police at the Universidad Científica del Sur. The arrest follows an allegation of sexual misconduct and inappropriate touching made by a medical student. Authorities are currently investigating the claims to determine criminal responsibility.
