UAT student hazing incident in Tamaulipas
Overview
An 18-year-old student, Ángel Tadeo Rubio Ortiz, was hospitalized in critical condition following a violent hazing ritual at the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT) Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics in Ciudad Victoria. Reports indicate the student was subjected to physical assaults and humiliation, including being covered in animal blood, excrement, and other substances. Additionally, he was reportedly forced to consume a habanero pepper despite having a known severe allergy, which led to a seizure and loss of consciousness.
While university officials initially suggested the medical emergency might have been caused by heatstroke, the student’s family filed a complaint with the State Human Rights Commission (Codhet) detailing the abuse. Following the incident, the student requested to withdraw from the university despite security guarantees offered by the institution.
The Tamaulipas State Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation for intentional injuries, and UAT is conducting an internal investigation through its University Rights Ombudsman to identify the perpetrators and address potential failures in faculty oversight. The Rector of UAT, Dámaso Anaya, has condemned the hazing, stating there is ‘zero tolerance’ for such behavior and promising maximum administrative sanctions against those responsible.
