Ubatuba and Belém report positive rabies cases in bats
In Ubatuba, Brazil, the Zoonoses Surveillance Unit (UVZ) confirmed that two bats tested positive for the rabies virus. The specimens, which feed exclusively on insects, were collected in April in the Taquaral neighborhood and on Anchieta Island, though the positive results were only confirmed in October.
Local authorities stated that this does not constitute a disease outbreak. Residents are advised not to touch or attempt to capture bats, whether alive or dead, and to contact the Zoonoses team if an animal is found in an unusual situation, such as on the ground or inside a building.
In Belém, health officials have intensified surveillance following a confirmed rabies case in a bat found in the Jurunas neighborhood. The Municipal Health Secretariat (Sesma) has organized a task force to conduct home visits within a 500-meter radius of the site and to update rabies vaccinations for domestic dogs and cats.
