Uber and 99 ordered to improve accessibility in Brazil

The Brazilian Federal Public Ministry (MPF) has issued recommendations to ride-hailing companies Uber and 99 to improve accessibility for elderly passengers and people with disabilities. The MPF is seeking more effective mechanisms to ensure safe boarding and disembarking, as well as the accommodation of assistive equipment such as wheelchairs and walkers during trips.

In addition to physical vehicle adjustments, the MPF has called for driver training to prevent discrimination and the frequent cancellation of trips requested by users with disabilities or those using service animals. The companies have been given 90 days to present a feasibility study regarding the implementation of specific service modes in Brazil, such as ‘Uber Access,’ which is already available in other countries.

These recommendations follow investigations into reports of service refusals and cancellations motivated by the presence of assistive devices or guide dogs. The MPF also requested proposals for service improvements and data regarding sanctions applied to drivers who fail to adequately serve these demographics.
