Uber commits $10 billion to launch 120,000 robotaxis worldwide

Uber announced a $10 billion investment to deploy up to 120,000 autonomous vehicles in major cities. The plan calls for commercial robotaxi services in at least 15 cities this year and expansion to 28 metropolitan areas by 2028. Uber will allocate roughly $7.5 billion to acquire, operate and manage the fleets, with the remainder earmarked for equity stakes in autonomous‑vehicle and electric‑car firms such as Wayve, Lucid Motors, Rivian, Zoox and Baidu.

The company’s first commercial test in the United Kingdom has been approved by Transport for London, allowing Wayve’s technology to run supervised rides with a safety driver in London. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the investment positions Uber as the long‑term leader in autonomous mobility, competing with Alphabet’s Waymo and Tesla.

Uber, which ended its own internal self‑driving program in 2020, is now acting as a platform that connects its 200 million‑plus users with third‑party autonomous‑vehicle providers.
