Uber exits Nigeria and Uganda ride-hailing markets

Uber has announced the cessation of its ride-hailing services in Nigeria and Uganda, ending its 12-year presence in the Nigerian market. The service in Nigeria officially stopped on September 2, 2026, following a review of business priorities and investment directions.

While analysts point to increased competition and rising operating costs, Uber has not officially cited these as the primary reasons for the withdrawal. The company stated the decision was “difficult” and noted that the move is limited to these two specific markets, with no impact on its operations in other sub-Saharan African countries.

The exit coincides with a broader global restructuring announced by CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. As part of this reorganization, Uber plans to reduce its global workforce by approximately 10%, affecting about 3,300 jobs. The restructuring aims to simplify management structures and reallocate capital and personnel toward high-priority opportunities.
