Uber, Lyft, and Waymo expand autonomous ride-hailing services

Major ride-hailing and autonomous driving companies are expanding commercial robotaxi services in key urban markets.

In London, Uber has partnered with AI technology firm Wayve to launch autonomous ride-hailing services. The service utilizes Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with Wayve’s AI Driver, which learns from experience without relying on high-definition maps. Currently, the service operates with trained safety drivers on board to monitor operations. Users can opt into autonomous rides via the Uber app at no additional cost, with the fleet expected to grow based on demand and regulatory developments.

In the United States, Lyft has launched a commercial partnership with Google’s Waymo in Nashville, Tennessee. This collaboration introduces driverless robotaxi services to the city, allowing passengers to book rides through either the Lyft or Waymo applications. Lyft’s subsidiary, Flexdrive, will manage the technical infrastructure, including vehicle maintenance, charging, and fleet operations. This move marks a strategic shift for Lyft, which is focusing on integrating autonomous technology through partnerships rather than in-house development.
