Uber has announced it will wind down its ride-hailing operations in Nigeria and Uganda, effective September 2, 2026. The company stated the decision follows a thorough review of its evolving business priorities and investment focus across Africa.

The exit from these markets is part of a broader global restructuring aimed at simplifying the company’s organizational structure and redirecting resources toward high-growth areas, specifically autonomous vehicles and robotaxi technology. This restructuring is expected to result in the elimination of approximately 3,300 positions, representing about 10 percent of Uber’s global workforce.

Uber clarified that its departure from Nigeria is not related to recent directives from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) regarding e-hailing services at airports. The company emphasized that it remains committed to its operations in the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa. To assist with the transition, Uber’s Help Centre will remain available until September 23, 2026, to address outstanding account-related enquiries.
