Uber to limit remote work to 1% amid major restructuring

Uber is implementing a major restructuring that includes limiting fully remote roles to approximately 1% of its workforce. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced in a memo that the vast majority of current remote employees will be asked to relocate to an office. The company will maintain a hybrid model requiring three days of in-office work per week.

This policy shift follows a decision to cut approximately 3,300 jobs, marking the company’s largest layoff round since the pandemic. The reorganization aims to flatten Uber’s organizational structure, which includes reducing management layers by about 20% and cutting “micro teams” that oversee only one or two people by roughly 50%.

Khosrowshahi cited the benefits of in-person collaboration, problem-solving, and mentoring for junior staff as the primary drivers for the change. Under the new model, global teams will be centralized in hubs such as New York and San Francisco, while regional and tech teams will be stationed in designated national and tech hubs.
