Ubuntu releases first official RISC-V desktop images

Canonical has released the first official riscv64 desktop images for the upcoming Ubuntu 26.10 release, titled ‘Stonking Stingray’. These experimental images are designed for the SpacemiT K3 development board, which utilizes the RVA23-compliant X100 core.

Two versions are currently available for testing: a standard Ubuntu Desktop featuring the GNOME interface and a minimal Xubuntu version. While the GNOME experience is reported to be performant on actual K3 hardware, the lighter Xubuntu build is recommended for users utilizing QEMU emulation to avoid extremely long load times.

This release marks a significant milestone for the RISC-V architecture, moving beyond server and cloud-only support to provide a functional graphical user interface. The transition follows Canonical’s decision to require the RVA23 profile, a move intended to push the ecosystem toward more capable silicon capable of handling desktop workloads.
