Ubuntu RISC-V desktop support development

Overview

Canonical has released experimental official RISC-V desktop images for the upcoming Ubuntu 26.10 release, codenamed ‘Stonking Stingray’. These images are designed to expand the operating system’s reach beyond x86 and ARM architectures by providing a functional graphical user interface.

Two versions are available for testing: a standard Ubuntu Desktop with the GNOME interface and a minimal Xubuntu version using Xfce. While the GNOME environment is reported to be performant on SpacemiT K3 hardware, the lighter Xubuntu build is recommended for those using QEMU emulation to mitigate long load times.

This development follows Canonical’s requirement for the RVA23 profile to ensure the ecosystem utilizes silicon capable of handling desktop workloads. While work continues to integrate RISC-V support into the Flutter library for the OS installer, some components, such as the App Center, are not yet ready for the architecture. The final version of Ubuntu 26.10 is scheduled for release on October 15, 2026.
