UEFA and FIFA conflict escalates over investor plans

The power struggle between UEFA and FIFA has escalated following a dispute over FIFA’s plans to sell stakes in a new commercial entity. The conflict centered on the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a subsidiary intended to bundle commercial rights for major tournaments like the Men’s and Women’s World Cups. FIFA had planned to sell approximately 20 percent of the FFE, which was valued at an estimated $20 billion, to external private investors.

In response, UEFA’s 55 member associations threatened a boycott of FIFA competitions. UEFA Vice President Laura McAllister stated that the boycott threat was successful, leading FIFA to withdraw the initiative. The boycott has since been lifted following guarantees that the FFE initiative would not be pursued in any form.

Despite the withdrawal of the investor plans, tensions remain high. UEFA is reportedly preparing legal action in Switzerland and has sent a 60-page document to a US court in Florida regarding allegations of criminal mismanagement. UEFA leadership, including Aleksander Ceferin, has accused FIFA President Gianni Infantino of abuse of power and failing in his official duties, demanding an independent external audit of FIFA’s finances.
