FIFA-UEFA financial clash over World Cup rights

In late July 2026 FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced FIFA Forward Enterprise, a plan to sell up to 20 % of the commercial rights to the 2026 World Cup and Club World Cup, valued at about $20 billion and tied to a raise in his salary. Continental confederations—including UEFA, CONCACAF and the AFC—immediately condemned the proposal, with UEFA’s 55 member associations announcing a boycott and demanding preservation of all project documents. After coordinated pressure, FIFA withdrew the plan on 2 August, and a brief attempt to revive it by doubling proposed payments to member associations failed.

On 3 August UEFA issued a formal notice to Infantino, stating it is considering legal action, arbitration and regulatory complaints over the abandoned stake‑sale. The federation reiterated its boycott of FIFA competitions until the offer is fully withdrawn and called the deal a breach of football governance.

Analysts now frame the public dispute as a deeper financial battle over who will control football’s long‑term revenue streams. The sport’s income model has shifted from tournament‑based earnings to continuous commercial streams—including data, digital platforms, audiovisual rights and commercial intelligence—and investment funds and financiers such as Joshua Kushner are reported to be involved. The outcome is seen as potentially shaping the economics of global football for the next three decades, underscoring the widening rift between FIFA and UEFA and raising further questions about future commercial arrangements for the game’s flagship events.
