UFRJ student assaulted following controversy over Nazi-linked band T-shirt

A student at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) was assaulted by other students on Tuesday night at the Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences (IFCS) in downtown Rio de Janeiro. The confrontation reportedly began after students questioned the young man for wearing a T-shirt featuring the British band Death in June, a group known for using symbols and visual elements associated with Nazism and the Third Reich.

Social media videos show a widespread physical altercation on the institute's stairs, with footage depicting the student being surrounded, arguing, and eventually being chased while fleeing the building. One student involved claimed they attempted to call for police intervention, but the situation escalated into violence before the individual could be detained.

The UFRJ has opened an internal investigation into the incident. In an official statement, the university repudiated both the alleged apology for Nazism and all forms of violence, reaffirming its commitment to democracy, human rights, and a zero-tolerance policy toward discriminatory manifestations.
