UFRJ student assault over Nazi imagery allegations

On August 25, 2026, a student at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) was physically assaulted by a group of approximately ten individuals at the Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences. The confrontation reportedly began after students challenged history student Diego Costa da Silva Araújo for wearing a T-shirt featuring the band Death in June and a brooch depicting a swastika with a red prohibition line. Araújo denied being a Nazi, stating his interest in such iconography is “purely academic” and that he identifies as a Marxist leftist.

By August 31, the situation evolved into conflicting allegations of racism and physical aggression. Law student Deivid Lima and legal representatives alleged that Araújo responded to questioning with racial slurs and physical violence. Araújo characterized the incident as an attempted homicide by dozens of people and cited ongoing doxxing as a barrier to returning to campus.

As of September 8, the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police investigation has utilized facial recognition technology to identify and question a professor and a security guard in relation to the August 25 event. While the investigation follows social media videos of the assault, police currently report no evidence confirming the accusations of racism. UFRJ continues its internal inquiry and maintains that staff are cooperating with authorities to clarify the circumstances.
