Uganda advances film industry and digital governance initiatives
In Uganda, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is facilitating nationwide access to local cinema through the Uganda Film Festival (UFF) 2026. The festival, running from August 21 to August 28, features various film screenings across multiple venues, including NuMax Cinema, Century Cinemax, and EMT Cinema. The event aims to connect filmmakers with audiences and will conclude with an awards gala on August 28 to recognize achievements in the local film industry.
Separately, Hon. Sarah Opendi, Chairperson of the Uganda Parliamentary Internet Governance Forum, is calling on legislators to engage more deeply with technological advancements. Highlighting a historical knowledge gap, Opendi noted that parliamentarians often struggle with technical digital legislation. She emphasized the need for updated frameworks to address modern challenges, such as artificial intelligence and data protection, noting that the executive is currently drafting amendments to address existing legislative gaps.
