Uganda agricultural resource program improves food security

A study conducted by researchers from the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) of Elche, specifically through the CIAGRO institute, has found that providing agricultural resources instead of cash loans significantly improves food security in Uganda.

The research, published in the journal World, focused on the Sembabule district within Uganda’s dry corridor. Instead of traditional monetary loans, vulnerable families received direct resources including maize seeds, goats, pigs, poultry, and agricultural training.

Results indicated that families receiving these agricultural inputs were able to secure sufficient food for an average of 8.17 months per year, compared to 6.86 months for those still in the training phase. This represents an increase of approximately 40 days of food security annually, providing a critical buffer against frequent droughts and resource scarcity in the region.
