Agricultural resource initiatives in Uganda

Overview

Efforts to enhance food security in Uganda have focused on providing direct agricultural resources and technical training to vulnerable populations. In the Sembabule district, research from Miguel Hernández University indicates that distributing maize seeds, livestock, and training is more effective for food security than traditional cash loans, extending the period of food sufficiency for families by approximately 40 days per year.

In the Yumbe and Madi Okollo districts, a Japanese-funded initiative is targeting refugee and host communities to promote economic empowerment and stability. This project, implemented by Peace Winds Japan in collaboration with UN Women Uganda and the National Agricultural Research Organisation, provides high-quality, drought-resilient rice seeds and technical training. The initiative aims to mitigate climate change impacts and reduce resource-based tensions by increasing agricultural productivity.
