Uganda allocates funding to upgrade hotels for AFCON 2027

The Ugandan government has announced significant funding to upgrade hotel infrastructure in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang confirmed that financial support will be channeled through the Uganda Development Bank (UDB) to help local hoteliers meet international four- and five-star standards.

In the Bunyoro sub-region, UGX 102 billion has been allocated. This includes UGX 52 billion for a new 100-bed, five-star hotel near Kabalega International Airport and Hoima City Stadium, UGX 30 billion for upgrading existing hotels, and UGX 20 billion for other hospitality facilities. Ogwang assured hoteliers that funds would be available within two weeks following directives from President Museveni.

Additionally, UGX 42 billion has been earmarked for private hotel investors in Gulu and Lira. These loans will feature a 5% interest rate and a three-year grace period before repayment begins. The Ministry of Sports plans to engage hotel owners in these northern cities to assess necessary improvements to accommodate teams and visitors during the tournament, which Uganda will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.
