Uganda and Kenya anti-corruption agencies arrest senior officials
Four senior officials from Uganda’s Mbale District Local Government – District Health Officer Dr. Wangisi Jonathan, District Education Officer Khaukha Sam Paddy, District Inspector of Schools Walufu Asadi and Nabumali Secondary School head teacher Nabiryo Betty Wamanga – were arraigned before the High Court’s Anti‑Corruption Division on charges of abuse of office and corruption through neglect of duty. The arrests followed a joint operation by the State House Anti‑Corruption Unit, the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, under the “Expose the Corrupt” campaign led by Local Government Minister Hon. Balaam Barugahara. The officials were remanded until August 2026.
In Kenya, the Ethics and Anti‑Corruption Commission (EACC) detained seven current and former officials from Nakuru County on allegations of a Sh120 million procurement fraud. Investigators say a county official used companies owned by her husband to secure 29 contracts between 2020/21 and 2024/25, resulting in conflict of interest and misappropriation of public funds. The arrested officials, including county executive members and chief officers, are being held for questioning, and the agency is pursuing two additional suspects.
