Uganda and US sign $1.7 billion health sector agreement

The governments of Uganda and the United States have signed a Strategic Objective Agreement (SOAG) to provide $1.7 billion (approximately Shs6.42 trillion) to support Uganda’s health sector from 2026 to 2030.

The agreement aims to enhance the prevention, detection, and response to both emerging and existing infectious disease threats. Funding will support critical areas such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and the management of hemorrhagic fevers, as well as public health surveillance and supply chain strengthening.

A significant shift in this partnership is the method of fund distribution. Unlike previous arrangements where much of the aid was channeled through non-governmental organizations and private charities, a substantial portion of this new funding will be directed through the central government of Uganda. Finance Minister Henry Musasizi stated this approach aligns with national objectives to strengthen country ownership and improve the sustainability of development cooperation.
