Uganda anti-corruption crackdown sees parliament officials interdicted and senior officials sentenced
Uganda's Inspector General of Government, Lady Justice Naluzze Aisha Batala, ordered the immediate interdiction of seven senior Parliament officials, including former Communications Director Chris Ariko Obore, pending the outcome of criminal proceedings for alleged embezzlement and financial loss. The officials were charged before the Anti‑Corruption Court on July 1, 2026 and are suspended from exercising their duties while the case proceeds.
In a separate anti‑corruption case, the Anti‑Corruption Division sentenced three senior government officials—Opio Francis, Otike Pabious, and Ogwang Joel—to up to four years in prison for fraudulently acquiring and disposing of land in Lira District. A non‑government accomplice, Atoo Rebecca, received a one‑year‑six‑months sentence. The court also barred the three officials from holding public office for ten years, emphasizing the breach of public trust and the need to restore confidence in public institutions.
