Uganda authorities investigate cattle compensation fraud and URA bribery

Ugandan authorities have launched separate corruption investigations involving cattle compensation fraud and tax audit bribery.

Otwang Moses has been charged in the Lira District Chief Magistrate’s Court for the alleged theft of Shs500 million. Investigators from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and the Criminal Investigations Directorate claim the funds, intended to compensate cattle owners for losses during past insurgencies in the Lango sub-region, were stolen between May 2024 and June 2025.

In a separate incident, the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) arrested Geoffrey Ssozi, a manager in the Customs Department, following a sting operation in Kampala. Ssozi is accused of soliciting a $60,000 bribe to suppress a tax audit for a company. URA officials stated the group initially demanded $100,000 before negotiating the amount down. Ssozi has denied the allegations, claiming he was framed due to a dispute involving cargo-consolidation fraud.
