Uganda coffee stakeholders urge higher quality standards for global markets

Stakeholders in Uganda’s coffee sector are calling for increased adherence to international quality standards to secure more competitive pricing on global markets. With coffee exports contributing Shs 8.2 trillion to the nation's GDP, the newly established Commercial Coffee Producers Association of Uganda (CCPAU) aims to strengthen the country's global market presence by emphasizing quality, consistency, and improved producer margins.

In the Greater Masaka region, specifically within the Kalungu and Bukomansimbi districts, coffee farming has driven significant economic transformation and infrastructure development. However, challenges remain regarding crop health and variety. Observations from commercial farmers indicate a reliance on old coffee clones, which are susceptible to Coffee Wilt Disease (CWD). Experts suggest that transitioning to Coffee Wilt Resistant Varieties, such as Kituza Robusta (KR) lines, and increasing coffee variety diversity could improve cup quality and pollination.
