Overview

Uganda’s coffee sector is undergoing significant expansion and structural changes. Stakeholders, including the newly formed Commercial Coffee Producers Association of Uganda (CCPAU), have emphasized the need for higher international quality standards and improved crop health to secure competitive global pricing. Specifically, farmers in the Greater Masaka region have been advised to transition to coffee wilt resistant varieties to combat disease and improve quality.

This focus on quality coincides with a major surge in exports, with annual volumes reaching approximately 8.8 million 60kg bags valued between US$2.3 billion and US$2.4 billion. This growth has positioned Uganda as Africa’s largest coffee exporter by volume. To further leverage this success, the government is pursuing a coffee tourism strategy that integrates production with agro-tourism, aiming to link the export industry with visitor experiences at farms and processing parks.
