Uganda conducts road safety operations targeting public service vehicles
The Directorate of Traffic in Uganda has provided an update on three ongoing road safety operations: Operation Ganyegenya, Operation Babala Salama, and Operation Tekeleza Sheria. These initiatives aim to reduce road crashes and promote safer conditions for all users.
Operation Ganyegenya, which targets Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) in dangerous mechanical condition, has reached its 27th day. Since its start, 499 vehicles have been impounded. Of the 369 vehicles inspected so far, 328 (88.9%) failed. Authorities noted that a 100-day grace period is currently in effect for taxi operators to rectify mechanical issues before enforcement intensifies and legal action is taken.
Operation Babala Salama is a joint effort between the Uganda Police Force and the Ministry of Works and Transport. This operation focuses on licensing compliance among PSVs and enforcing operational guidelines for Sinotruks and other heavy trucks.
