Uganda road safety and vehicle compliance operations

Overview

Uganda has implemented several road safety operations, including Operation Ganyegenya, Operation Babala Salama, and Operation Tekeleza Sheria, to reduce crashes and enforce compliance.

Operation Ganyegenya targets public service vehicles (PSVs) in dangerous mechanical condition. During its first 27 days, 499 vehicles were impounded, with 88.9% of inspected vehicles failing. A 100-day grace period is currently in place for taxi operators to fix mechanical issues before legal action intensifies. Meanwhile, Operation Babala Salama focuses on licensing compliance and enforcing guidelines for heavy trucks.

In response to these safety concerns, the Ministry of Works and Transport has urged commercial truck owners to prioritize safety over business efficiency. Officials emphasized that preventive maintenance and regular inspections are essential, warning that minor defects can lead to major risks when combined with heavy loads or driver fatigue.
