Uganda earns $1.6 billion annually from labor exports
Uganda earns approximately $1.6 billion annually from labor exports, according to Bank of Uganda Deputy Governor Professor Augustus Nuwagaba. This income serves as a vital source of foreign exchange, supporting household spending, contributing to foreign exchange reserves, and strengthening the country’s current account.
Of these earnings, roughly $900 million is generated by unskilled workers, primarily located in Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. The remaining $700 million is produced by skilled professionals, many of whom work in the United States.
Nuwagaba noted that Uganda could increase these revenues by enhancing vocational and professional training. He emphasized that skilled workers are more likely to secure higher-paying positions, which would increase the volume of remittances sent back to the country. In addition to labor exports, tourism and investment contribute approximately $4 billion annually to Uganda’s foreign exchange earnings.
