Uganda Minister faces criticism over anti-corruption methods

Uganda's Minister of Local Government, Balaam Barugahara, has ordered the interdiction of two engineers in Rwampara District, Gilbert Muhangi and Christopher Muhwezi, following allegations of mismanaging over Shs400 million in road rehabilitation funds. The directive follows resident complaints regarding poor workmanship on several roads, including the Nguugo-Bituntu and Nyamukana-Kibaare-Byanamira routes. Additionally, a clinical officer at Kinoni Health Centre IV has been interdicted over allegations of soliciting money for district jobs.

The Inspectorate of Government (IGG) has criticized Barugahara’s approach to these anti-corruption operations. Inspector General Aisha Naluzze stated that while the fight against corruption is appreciated, the Minister's methods may violate due process by shaming individuals before they are proven guilty. The IGG emphasized the importance of following legal procedures during arrests and public accusations to ensure justice is served.
