Uganda Ministry of Works and Transport urges truck safety compliance
Uganda’s Ministry of Works and Transport has urged commercial truck owners and operators to prioritize road safety and vehicle compliance over business efficiency. Winstone Katushabe, the Commissioner for Transport Regulation and Safety, emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility involving manufacturers, owners, drivers, and enforcement agencies.
Katushabe warned that minor vehicle defects can escalate into major safety risks when combined with heavy loads, high speeds, or driver fatigue. He encouraged operators to view preventive maintenance and regular inspections as essential business practices rather than mere regulatory hurdles. Additionally, he called on fleet owners to ensure drivers are properly licensed and to avoid pressuring them into speeding or overloading.
